3 types of joints are fixed joints (immovable), cartilaginous joints (slightly movable), and synovial joints (freely movable)
types of synovial joint are: hinge, ball and socket, condyloid, gliding, pivot, saddle
articulation is where 2 or more bones meet
a bursa- a small fluid filled sac which provides a cushion between tendons and bones preventing friction. Bursae are filled with synovial fluid
articular cartilage on the end of bones provides a smooth and slippery covering to stop the bones rubbing and grinding together. They are also shock absorbing.
synovial membrane- the capsule lining that releases synovial fluid. it secretes the synovial fluid
synovial fluid- a thick (viscous) liquid that lubricates the joint and reduces friction between bones, preventing them from rubbing together. It also provides nutrients to the articular cartilage.
ligaments- hold the bones together and keep them in place
