The vertebral column is divided into 5 regions. The cervical curve, thoracic curve, lumbar curve, sacral curve and coccyx. Easy way to remember is Cats Taste Like Sloppy Custard.
The cervical curve has 7 vertebrae that make up the top of the spine and neck. The atlas and axis form a pivot joint to allow the neck to move freely. C1- atlas. C2- axis.
the thoracic curve is made up of 12 vertebrae and is the largest vertebral region. It is in the middle of the spine and they articulate with the ribs. They protect the heart and the lungs
the lumbar curve is the largest of the vertebrae (5 big vertebrae) situated at the lower back. They support a lot of weight and provide attachment for back muscles.
the sacral curve is 5fused vertebrae found between the coccyx and the lumbar curve. It forms the back of the pelvis
the coccyx is the bottom of the vertebral column which are fused together to form the tail bone.
kyphosis is the excessive outwards curve of the thoracic region of the spine resulting in a hunchback appearance. It is usually a result of bad posture or deformities of the vertebrae
scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine either to the left or right (lateral curvature). It is often found in children and there is no explanation as to what causes it
