axial and appendicular

• axial skeleton is made up of the central core of bones
• appendicular skeleton hangs off the axial skeleton and is the outer limbs and bones.
• the axial skeleton consists of the skull, cranium, mandible (and facial bones), thoracic cage (sternum and ribs) and the vertebral column
• appendicular skeleton is split into 4 parts which are the upper limbs, lower limbs, pelvic girdle and shoulder girdle
• upper limbs in the appendicular skeleton are the humerus, radius, ulna, phalanges (fingers), carpals and metacarpals
• lower limbs in the appendicular skeleton are the, tibia, fibula, femur, tarsals, metatarsals, phalanges (toes) and patella
• the pelvic girdle is made up of the ilium, pubis and ischium
• the shoulder girdle is made of the clavicle and scapula
