  • Language register - level of formality with which you speak
  • Frozen or static - language is literally frozen in time and form. Does not change often repeated by rote
  • Formal - impersonal and often follows a prescriptive format. Uses complete sentences and avoids slang
  • Consultative - used when consulting an expert such as a doctor
  • Casual - conversational in tone used among and between friends words are general rather than technical. May include more slang
  • Intimate - used by lovers or very close friends. Best avoided in public and professional situations
