  • dye binding
    Methyl orange - disadvantage being it does not bind to all proteins
  • HABA disadvantages
    many interferences: aspirin, penicillin, conjugated bilirubin, and sulfonamides (4)
  • BCG disadvantages
    • bilirubin interferes
    • low albumin levels can be overestimated (can look lower than they actually are) 
    • after five minutes, a-1 globulins may start to absorb dye
  • BCP advantage - more specific for albumin
  • BCP disadvantages
    • in some renal patients, albumin can be structurally altered and BCP will not always bind to that albumin
  • SPEP findings
    • Viral hepatitis
    • Decrease in a-1, a-2, and beta (3)
    • Marked decrease in albumin
    • Increase in gamma
