  • Music is a collection of coordinated sound or sounds. It is the art of combining vocal or instrumental sounds or both to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.
  • Sound – it is an energy perceived through the sense of hearing, and is produced by vibrations. Is produced when there is a periodic motion of the particles of a body in alternately opposite directions. Sounds can be human voice or produced from objects.
  • Silence – it is the absence of sound or noise. It is used briefly or for longer periods in music to add an emphasis to vocals or instrumentals, creating an impact to the listener.
  • Contemporary music in the Philippines usually refers to compositions that have adopted ideas and elements from twentieth century art music in the West, as well as the latest trends and musical styles in the entertainment industry.
  • Original Pilipino Music (OPM) is commonly used as an umbrella term for musical compositions and songs created and performed by Filipino artists.
  • GENRES
    1. Pop Music – a form of music that generally uses a simple, memorable melody, and emphasizes the rhythm which repeats throughout much of the song.
    2. Ballad – refers to popular love songs that are slow in tempo and have sweet and serenading melody, with roots that may be stemmed from kundiman and harana.
    3. Rock Music – a form of music with prominent vocal melody accompanied by guitar, drums, and bass.
  • GENRES
    4. Hip-hop – a form of music typically consisting of a rhythmic, rhyming vocal style called “rapping” chanted over backing beats and scratching performed on a turntable by a DJ.
    5. Folk Music – a form of music with strong ethnic influence. It is characterized by simple melodies and typically uses indigenous musical instruments and styles.
    6. Novelty Music – refers to popular songs that are built upon a novel concept, usually from gimmicks, pieces of humor, or nonsensical themes.

    7. Rhythm and Blues – a form of music commonly characterized by soulful melody and voice.
    8. Reggae – a form of music that uses staccato beats played through a guitar or piano which give a “jumpy” or lively vibe.
  • THEMES
    1. Politics – artists are influenced to compose and perform by the current political climate or any subject matter related to politics
    2. Gender Sensitivity – other musical compositions have themes focused on raising awareness to and boosting initiatives to solve gender-related issues
    3. Love and Relationship – artists write and sing songs that serenade someone, appreciate romantic love
  • THEMES
    4. Nationalism and Patriotism – many songs and musical compositions promote love for our country and boosts a sense of collective identity.
    5. Self-worth – there are also several Filipino songs that boost our self-esteem.
