  • Baseline data - before sessions

    Albert presented with variety of objects: and then bar was struck (unconditioned stimuli)

    findings:
    • No fear of objects
    • When bar struck: arms up and trembled
    • 2nd time: fell forward and cried
  • Session 1:
    • Creating a conditioned response (11 months 3 days)
    • In a laboratory and presented with the white rat, initially showing no fear.
    • After being presented a second time, a bar was struck with a hammer creating a loud noise

    findings:
    • jumped fell forward but didnt cry
    • 2nd time: fell forward and cried
  • Session 2:
    • Testing the conditioned emotional response (11 months 10 days)
    • Shown rat with no sound to see affects on behaviour
    • After this exposed 5 times to joint stimulation of the rat and loud noise
    findings:
    • Did not reach for rat - showed fear
    • Cautious furry objects
    • Moved when dog came near
  • Session 3:
    • Generalisation (11 months, 15 days)
    • Presented with rat, wooden blocks, rabbit and cotton wool to see if response was generalised
    findings
    • Blocks: played
    • Dog: not as bad
    • Rabbit: Leaned away and cried
    • Fur coat: Cried, crawled away
  • Session 4
    • Changing the environment (11 months 20 days)
    • Large well lit lecture room with 4 people and Albert was placed in centre
    • Joint stimulation
    findings:
    • Less exetreme responses
    • Happily play with blocks
    • Persisted against furry objects
  • Session 5:
    • Effect of time (12 months and 21 days)
    • Tested for last time with all elements
    findings:
    • Occasionally cried, whimpered, response to furry objects was more extreme than control
