  • Effectiveness
    • Teasdale - evaluated MCBT on 145 depressed individuals (relapse and reoccurance assessed over 60 weeks)
    • Patients had Treatment As Usual (TAU) or TAU and 8 MCBT sessions
    • MCBT Great help with reoccuring episodes
    • Did not affect those with only 1-2 episodes but reduced risk of relapse
    • MCBR (6-10 week course) of structured guided meditation
    • Reibel: reduced anxiety in 136 patients who had an 8 week course and meditated 20 minutes a day
    THEREFORE:
    beneficial in assisting physical and mental disorders
  • Dependent on the type
    • Some psychological problems more effective in group environment
    • Mantzios + Giannou - studied group vs individual mindfulness on a weight loss goal, 170 participants in a 6 week mindfulness group
    • Group condition lost more weight and reduced social avoidance

    • Benefits of individual mindfulness must be taken with caution
  • Integrarion with other therapies
    • Mindfulness offers a new altenate therapy
    • Incoporated to other therapies like psychotherapy an CBT
    • eg: Mindfulness CBT is a 4 stage aporach to help change thinking processes (modify unrealistic perceptions)
  • Positive applications
    • Mindfulness can be used in neuroscience:
    Hoizel: meditating 30 minutes a day improves density of grey matter (memory, stress, empathy)
    • Use in schools:
    Kuyken: Compared children taking part in mindfulness and normal cirriculum
    result found those doing mindfulness were less stressed and had better well-being
  • Ethics
    • Reduced psychological harm :)
    Does not involve the past (reduces anxiety)
    encourages acceptance
    THEREFORE: less frustrating

    Delivered to vunerable people (depressed individuals)
    risk to depersonalisation “dark night”, buddhists experience traumatic memories during meditation
