The Water Cycle

Cards (25)

  • What should you be able to describe by the end of the video?
The stages of the water cycle
  • In a previous video, what abiotic factor was discussed that affects communities?
    Water
  • What does abiotic mean?
    Not living
  • What are we looking at in this video regarding water?
    How water cycles around ecosystems
  • Where is almost all of the water on Earth found?
    In the oceans
  • What kind of water is found in the oceans?
    Salt water
  • What causes water to evaporate from the surface of the sea?
    Energy from the Sun
  • What happens to water vapor as it travels into the air?
    It cools down
  • What does water vapor do when it cools down?
    It condenses to form clouds
  • What is the water in clouds called when it falls to the ground?
    Precipitation
  • What type of water is contained in all forms of precipitation?
    Fresh water
  • What happens to some of the water when it hits the ground?
It evaporates back into the atmosphere
  • What does some of the water form when it passes through rocks?
    Aquifers
  • What do a lot of the water form when it hits the ground?
    Rivers or streams
  • Where do the water in rivers and streams eventually drain back into?
    The sea
  • Besides the sun and general geography, what else plays a role in the water cycle?
    Living organisms
  • How do plants take up water?
    Through their roots
  • Where does the water that plants take up move up the plant?
    In the xylem
  • Where does water pass out of the leaf as water vapor?
    Stomata
  • What do scientists call the process of water passing out of the leaf as water vapor?
    Transpiration
  • How do animals take in water?
Through drinking and in their food
  • How do animals release water?
In their feces and when they exhale
  • What are the stages of the water cycle?
    • Evaporation: Water turns into water vapor due to solar energy.
    • Condensation: Water vapor cools and forms clouds.
    • Precipitation: Water falls back to earth as rain, snow, hail or sleet.
    • Collection: Water gathers in rivers, streams, and aquifers, eventually draining back into the sea or evaporating.
    • Transpiration: Water is taken up by plant roots, moves up the plant in the xylem and passes out of the leaf stomata as water vapor.
    • Animals drink and eat, releasing water in their feces and when they exhale.
  • After evaporating from the sea's surface, where does the water vapor travel?
    Into the air
  • Where do the rivers and streams eventually drain?
    Back into the sea
